This family has been discussed on this forum previously, but since the last reply was in 2001, I'm restarting the thread in the hope I'll get replies.
I am looking for any info anyone may have about the Bartley family of the Pacific. The Bartley name still survives in Samoa, with related descendants in Tonga, Fiji and the Marshall Islands amongst other places.I know a little bit about the family, but I am sure that there are people out there who know a lot more than me about them.Below I’ll present all the information I have about them:
As far back as I have gotten, the progenitors are Frederick Charles Bartley and Sarah Harrison (or possibly Sarah Ann Finnegan). They may also have been known by their middle names. They were Irish- this I have seen written on a semi official source by one of their great grandchildren (not to mention Finnegan being a ‘very Irish’ name).
Their children were Isabella, Sarah, Charles, Lucy (my great great grandmother), Kathleen (or Katherine) and Anne. Charles is profiled on page 108 of the “Cyclopedia of Samoa, Tonga, Tahiti, and the Cook Islands” McCarron, Stewart & Co. 1907. It mentions that he was born in Auckland in 1857, and went to Samoa with his parents when he was 5, as well as him running away to sea and then settling down as a trader. An Alfred Bartley is profiled on page 89; I think he is a son of Charles.
I looked up Charles’ entry in the Registers of Births Deaths and Marriages for Auckland. He was born on 19 Aug 1858.His parents are listed as Frederick Bartley, (occupation: Engineer), and Sarah Bartley nee Harrison.
Charles married a Samoan named Pauline (?Mapusua). They had seven children, and gave rise to the Bartley line in Samoa.
Isabella Frances Bartley is listed on familysearch.org. She married Alfred Decker in Samoa in 1874.
Kathleen Bartley married a captain Frederick Narruhn of the Marshall Islands.
Lucy Jane Bartley (my g g grandmother)was born in 1862 in Fiji. She married Hermann Guttenbeil in Tonga in 1882.
One puzzling thing for me was a possible connection with America for this family. When I looked through official Samoan records, I was able to find the marriage of Charles Bartley the younger to Luisa Rieling.Charles (son of Charles b1858 and Paulina Tuala) states he was born on 2 Nov 1888, and that he is an American citizen.
This somewhat puzzled me, as I had never heard of the Bartleys being American. However it made some sense when I found various threads on this forum: http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?samoa::bartley::253.htmlhttp://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?samoa::bartley::253.html There it is mentioned that Frederick Charles Bartley came from Lexington, Kentucky, although other postings suggest that his son Charles (born Auckland 1858) who ran away to sea may have ended up in the USA on his travels.Anyway, I’d be interested to see how they got that far back – just to be sure we’re researching the same line! Anyway I would be very keen to hear from anyone out there – I know there are people who know more about this than me!
