BARTLETT DNA Results Overview
So far we have 181 participants, plus 9 additional participants with mtDNA, only. 15 participants have ordered the new Family Finder DNA Test.
Using these results we have matching DNA that “proves” 18 separate lines, none of which is related to any of the others in Colonial America. Some lines could possibly be related before the immigrants came to America, but most lines do not relate to each other for over 1,000 years. So there were at least 18 Immigrants to the Colonies. Beware of statements that all BARTLETTs descend from one line; or there were 2 or 3 brothers who came to America – one went north and one went south. There are at least 18 different lines. See also Explanatory Notes at the end.
Group B [Team 3]; Richmond Co, VA [11 matches] Haplogroup E1b1b1a2 – Patriarch (maybe the immigrant): Thomas BARTLETT 1705-1783 Richmond Co, VA (descendants of 3 sons have matching DNA); also matching is Nimrod BARTLETT c1760s SC to KY to AR; and Louis Frederick BARTLETT c1885-1956 of Cumberland, MD
Group C; Somerset Co, MD & Dobbs Co, NC [10 matches]; Haplogroup R1b1b2 - Immigrant/Patriarch: Nicholas BARTLETT I b 1642 England or France; of Somerset Co, MD; [ref: “The Bartlett Line from the Mathews Collection by J. Alonzo Mathews” extracted and preserved by LT Thos M Neel]; also matching is Samuel BARTLETT 1750 of Dobbs Co, NC [ref “Family Lines” by Adelle Bartlett Harper, 1973. NB: Adelle had Samuel as son of Samuel BARCLIFT of Perquimans Co, NC – that ancestry is not proved and is contradicted by the DNA results; the partriarch is probably Nicholas]
Group D [Team 7]; VA; Essex/Spotsylvania Co, VA [4 matches]; Haplogroup R1b1b2 – Patriarch: Thomas BARTLETT b 1670 of Essex Co, VA, through his only known son William b 1690 of Spotsylvania Co, VA (descendants of 2 sons have matching DNA)
Group E: BERK[E]LEY from Westmoreland and Loudoun Co, VA; [4 matches]; Haplogroup R1b1b2 – Patriarch: Thomas BERKLEY b 1690 (descendants of 2 sons have matching DNA) [ref: “BERKLEY – A Family History” by Waverly Lee Berkley, III (self published)]; also includes Garner BARTLETT of Montgomery Co, MD
Group F [Teams 9 & 11]; Plymouth, MA; Henry Co, VA; KY; TN [21 matches]; Haplogroup R1b1b2 – Immigrant/Patriarch: Robert BARTLETT b 1603 Puddleton, Dorset, England, of “Anne”, lived Plymouth, MA m Mary WARREN, desc of Mayflower; (descendants of at least 2 sons have matching DNA) [ref: The Society of Descendants of Robert Bartlett of Plymouth, MA – www.bartlettsociety.com ]; also includes John BARTLETT of Buncombe Co, NC; and brothers Joseph BARTLETT 1765 VA, Joshua BARTLETT 1768 NC, and Nathan BARTLETT 1751 (11 descendants of several sons have matching DNA) ; and John BARTLETT d 1801 Greene Co, KY (m Priscilla) (descendants of 2 sons have matching DNA). All of these 21 results match, indicating the TN & KY lines probably descend from the Plymouth, MA Patriarch.
Group G [Team 6]; VA; Warren Co, NC [7 matches]; Haplogroup R1b1b2 – Patriarch: Samuel BARTLETT b c1702 Essex Co, VA, d aft 1733 Pr Geo Co, VA [ref “The Bartlett Tree & Thee” by Hope Bartlett Taylor]; also includes James BARTLETT 1760 VA - 1823 Patrick Co, VA; also Starling BARTLETT b 1783 VA, m 1797 GA; William BARTLETT b 1784 VA of Weakley Co, NC; and Thomas BARTLETT b 1731 Somerset, England > Thomas > Charles to Canada; and John BARTLETT 1677-1761 of Norwalk, CT [Team 6]. Samuel was probably the Patriarch of all of these BARTLETTs from VA; the Patriarch of Samuel, Thomas b 1731 and John b 1677 may have lived in England in the 1600s, and several of his sons came to America.
Group H; Talbot Co, MD [4 matches]; Haplogroup R1b1b2 – Patriarch: Thomas BARTLETT b 1635 Bradford, Yorkshire, England; d 1711 Talbot Co, MD [ref: “The Bartlett and Allied Families 1693-1984 – Twigs and Turf Vol 2” by R Bernice Leonard]; also includes Thomas BARTLETT b 1782 GA; m 1805; and William BARTLETT b c1823 MS, parents b MD/TN

Group Q; Perquimans Co, NC [2 BARCLIFT matches]; Haplogroup I1 – Patriarch may be a BARTLETT, the early Ancestry is a little fuzzy [ref “Family Lines” by Adelle Bartlett Harper, 1973. Adelle outlined the early BARCLIFTs of Perquimans Co, NC – that ancestry is not proved and is contradicted by the DNA resultes – see Group G]

Not yet confirmed by Y-DNA Testing:
Team 1: Robert BARTLETT b 1632 of “Lyon” to CT and MA
Team 4: James > Samuel Douglas BARTLETT
Team 10: John BARTLETT of Weymouth, MA & Cumberland, RI
Here are some lines with Y-DNA results, but so far no matching/confirming DNA:
BARTLETTs of PA
BARTLETTs of NJ
BARTLETTs of Worcester Co, MA
BARTLETTs of New London, CT
We need another participant for each of these in order to establish matching DNA.

Note: a Haplotype refers to an individual’s specific DNA result (a string of numbers); a Haplogroup refers to a much larger group of very similar Haplotypes which all belong to the same family of humans thousands of years ago. Lines from different Haplogroups do not relate for thousands of years, or more. Usually, by looking at the specific Haplotypes of living descendants, we can determine what the Haplotype of the earliest Ancestor would have been.
Here is how to understand the information above – I have:
- given each BARTLETT line a Group Letter; and noted in brackets if there is a BARTLETT Team [see http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cst/bartlett/index.htmhttp://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cst/bartlett/index.htm for the Teams];
- noted the general area(s) they were from;
- shown the number of matching DNA results in brackets;
- listed the Haplogroup [you can google it to learn about the Deep Ancestry];
- listed an Immigrant or Patriarch, where known;
- provided any published references (books or websites) about that line. Please send any corrections or additions to email@example.com.
For those who are interested, the following is a list of Groups for which a Deep Clade [DC] has been done on at least one of the tests in the Group. This test confirms the Haplogroup – others in this Group do not need to pay for a DC test, as the results would be the same. This information has virtually no impact on genealogy research; it’s mainly used for ancestry thousands of years ago, before surnames.
