Re: Barwis Ernest Henry 1870 England
Edith Ellen Grace Roberts nee Barwis was my mother. She married my father, Frederick George Roberts, in 1924. I, David Francis Roberts, was born on the 25th April 1930 and I had one sister, Dilys Anne Roberts, who was born on the 16th February 1935 and who died in December 1989. My mother died in January 1972 in her 68th year. My father was born on the 19th January 1902 and died on the 19th November 1997.
My maternal grandmother was Ethel Barwis nee Tranter,(later Stuart?). When I was a child and used to visit her with my mother she lived in Prospect Road, Sydenham, SE26, (I forget the house number). I was told my grandfather, Charles Alexander Stuart, was very proud of the fact that his surname was that of the royal house of the same name. After all this time though I cannot vouch for this fact however.
I also remember before the war us visiting my uncle Sid once, I believe it was in Sidcup, Kent, or was it Catford, I forget now. All I can really remember of that visit was that he had a mechanical singing canary in a cage. It was rather like the one shown at the begining and the end of the TV antiques show 'Going for a Song.
In your message you refer to a brother on the Tranter side of the family who married a French girl. My mother used to talk of her uncle Tom who lived in America and who was married to a French lady, auntie Laura. As a child I met them once at my grasndmother's house and auntie Laura said I should stay a while with her in France so that I could learn to speak French but the outbreak of war put an end to all that.
Incidentally I seem to remember that my mother said that her mother's mother, her maternal grandmother used to live with them and that her surname before she was married was Carveth and that she came from Wadebridge in Cornwall.
I was not aware that my mother had a sister, Ethel, and I never heard her talk of her. Maybe there was some rift between them or there was some other reason.
I think that is all I can remember of those long distant days at present but if I think of anything more I will post another message.
I myself have emigrated to Botswana in Southern Africa. I have lived in Africa for 37 years now.
