Re: Clairssa barwis
I have spent over twenty years researching and documenting this family. I can prove every generation back to Joseph Barwise, blacksmith, who married Fanny Stoddard. Beyond that the records just are not there. Mr. Roger Barwise is descended from my 2nd great grandfather, James Barwise by his second wife Margaret Griffith. James emigrated in 1867 with his first wife Isabella Gibson and children, going to New York, Kentucky, possibly Mississippi, then to Texas where he married Margaret Griffith after Isabella's death. They had two children, Clarissa (Artie) and Isaac. James drowned in 1883 at Illinois Bend, after which Margaret took her children to West Texas. Family story has always said she cheated the children of his first marriage out of the land he had accumulated. But except for a picture my grandmother left that was signed "Your Auntie Artie Solomon" there seems to have been little communication between the two sets of children. I will have to burst Roger's bubble. The family were not of the gentry, but all were shoemakers and blacksmiths. My research on this family continues with hopefully another trip to England in the future. I think one of the most interesting stories that I have documented is that James Barwises' mother Margaret was in Lancaster Castle Prison in 1841. Sorry Roger, no aristocracy.
