Hi Rachel: Have a great reunion! Try to print copies of the Congressman Mark Alexander slave list, dated April 9,1865, on the date of the surrender of Robert E. Lee and the Confederate Army. The list is of 217 slaves owned by mark Alexander, men, boys, women and girls, aged 84 to 2 months old. The plantation adjacent was owned by Doctor Robert Dortch Baskeville whose family were intermarried with the Alexanders and their slaves were related and also "intermarried".Dr. Robert Dortch Baskerville had a plantation called "Waverly" and William Rust Baskerville had a plantation called "Buena Vista". Some of the Alexander slaves, either married Baskerville ex-slaves or took the name Baskerville, rather than Alexander. One of many reasons could be that there were free African American Baskervilles living in Mecklenberg County who were either born free or emancipated as far back as 1809-1841, there were nine free Baskervilles. One named Myra Baskerville was emancipated by the will of TABITHA Baskeville in 1831. There was a James, Jane, Ferry, Rachel, Lucy, Eliza, andEasy,Baskerville, all free between 1831-1841. In the period of 1841-1865, there were ten, Benjamin, Jane, Quintana, Ferry,Peter, Eliza, Henry, Mary, Amey and Isaac Baskerville.
Note: There are no- zero- nada- Alexander free African Americans in Mecklenburg County until after 1865, the end of the Civil War!
Mark Alexander, it appears; never-never freed a slave, any slave, even his own offspring!
It appears that he stayed true to his Scotch-Irish traditions.
My grandfather ,who was a slave of Alexander, did keep his Alexander name.
There was a Baskerville "Shoe List", which was given out in 1838, (and other years, also) which stated ,given out on November 25, at the first snow of the season.
By the way, remember, that the Baskervilles were from England and of some nobility. The "Hounds of the Baskervilles" for instance.
The shoe list names included, York, Elsey,Eaton,Hardy, Miles, Dory, Bob, Gilbert, Charly, Dick, William, Plummer, Edmond, Frederick, Ned, Brunswick, Douglas, Warwick, Nelson, hawkins, Warren, Long Mary, Amy, Cary, Matilda, Fanny, Arrabela, Azzy, Betty, Sally, Minsy Cole, Betsey Cook, Dorinda, Carolina, Charlotte, Louisa, Charlotte, Kitty, Agnys. Have a good reunion!Lloyd
