"Capt. Bilger of the Seventh Rhode Island Artillery, is one man shot today.David Painter of Capt. Haze's Company, upon picket duty, fired upon a Yankee who fled with others of this command.The Yankee's horse fell and our pickets brought him in.Upon examination of the prisoner, he was shot through his overcoat and dress coat, the ball penetrating a Bible he had in his breast pocket; nothing saved him except the book.His name is Phillip Bassett of Portsmouth, Rhode Island..."
