My mother's name was Josephine Rachel Bastow, born August 9th 1912. She had three younger brothers, my uncles, Austin, Samuel Joseph, and Charles. Their father, James Bastow was a Canadian school teacher. He came to England early 1900's and married my grand mother, Minnie Matthews. He went back to Canada to search for work and having secured a position sent for his wife to come over to Canada. When the ship sailed she was three months pregnant and felt too sick to cross the Atlantic in a 3rd class cabin. She went back to stay with her parents. The ship was the Titannic. James assumed his wife was lost and when a telegram arrived informing him that Minnie was not on board he did not open it thinking it only contained bad news. Then a friend persuaded him to open it. He returned to England an was re-united with his wife and my mother was born. The Titannic was always a good talking point in my family after that. Does anyone know who James Bastow was? I know very little about him and his wife Minnie. They both died before I was born.
