Do you have the names and dates for the other 5 children of Jabez and Hannah?

In the 1850 census for Stockholm, St. Lawrence Co., NY, I found:
Leonard Bates, age 59, farmer, b. Vt. [SON OF HANNAH & JABEZ?]
Rhoda, age 62, b. Ct.
Andrew, age 69, b. Vt.
Hannah, age 77, b. Vt. [HANNAH PHIPPEN?]
Alexis, age 24, farmer, b. NY
Jabez P., age 22, b. NY

I believe Leonard is probably the son of your Jabez and Hannah.Although, if the age for Hannah is correct, she would have been born in 1773, which doesn't match your Jabez and Hannah dates.It's possible, of course, that there was a transcription error.The date for Leonard matches the above Leonard, i.e. b. 1791.

I'm pretty sure Leonard and Rhoda are the parents of our Alexis and Jabez P.The names fit, the dates are good, etc.I haven't found where Alexis and Jabez P. (for Phippen?) were born.I found a Leonard Bates in the 1830 and 1840 census in Moriah, Essex Co., New York.

Also in 1830 and 1840, there is a Leonard Bates in Burlington, Otsego, NY and Ellisburg, Jefferson, NY.In 1840, there is a Leonard Bates in Guildford, Chenango Co., NY.Haven't checked closely to see if Alexis and Jabez ages would match the children's ages in any of these censuses.

In the LDS FamilySearch program, I found a Jabez P. Bates, b(?) 1828 in Elizabethtown, Essex, NY; d 2/1/1893.

If you are doing a book on Bates in Vermont, the "History of Waitsfield" by Matt. B. Jones has a Bates genealogy in the back.Since my husband's grandmother was from there, and married Jonathon Bates, I've tried to tie him into the Waitsfield Bates, with no success so far.The families listed might fit into your genealogy.
