Dear Michaela

I have found that the surname occurs in two main areas - London (a big place I know, but almost certainly all one family) and in the Brierley Hill (Staffs.) area. I am a descendant of the latter, as are all Bathams locally. I think that the earliest known ancestor of my line also came from the London area - this was Henry Batham who died & was buried in Wolverhampton in the early 1600's. The only marriage on the IGI for the correct period for a Henry was to a Grace Goffe (can't remember all the details - will have to check my notes!) somewhere in London. If this is the correct marriage this would mean all Bathams are probably the same family! which makes sense as the name is extremely rare outside these two areas.
