BATTERMANN, Maxwell &Tilly, 1918, NYC

My first question is what are the origins of the name Batterman(n)?? What does it mean and in what language? I am granddaughter of Maxwell and Tilly Battermann who apparently were immigrants from Poland(Russia) around WWLThey settled in Richmond Heights(Brooklyn), NY and were Jewish. Is Batterman like Smith in that we are following a certain named profession and many of us unrelated? As I see in the messages posted there have been Batterman here in the US for over 150 years.Any enlightenment here?
