6. Loranza8 D. Battles, son of F. Caswell Battles-grandson of Wm. Noel Battles, born 20 July 1840, died 12 January 1916. He is listed in his father’s will. He married Catherine Sheffield, born 5 May 1837, died 21 July 1921, (she is listed as living alone on the 1920 St. Clair County Census). Catherine was the daughter of Wesley Sheffield. Lorenza and Catherine are buried at Reeves Grove Baptist Church. Loranza served in the Confederate Army in Co. G, 48th Alabama Infantry for four years as a private. He was wounded at Gettysburg.
Children born to Loranza and Catherine Sheffield Battles:
1. Mary Battles first child of Loranza and Catherine, born ca 1867
2. Emley Battles second child of Loranza and Catherine, born ca 1870, she married R. L. Montgomery on 18 March 1881 in Etowah County, Alabama.
3. Wesley A. Battles third child of Loranza and Catherine, born March 1874, he was boarding with the Lafayette Bowlon family in 1900. He married Ella C. Handley on 17 November 1901 in St. Clair County, Alabama (EARLY ALABAMA MARRIAGES- page 95). In 1920 they were residents of Gadsden, Etowah County, Alabama.Wesley & Ella C. Handley Battles have two children:
*1. James Leonard Battles born 20 August 1903; died April 1981 —as listed in the Social Security Death Index. He married Olga Moore. In 1980 they were residents of Birmingham, Alabama.
2. Preston Battles born 1907, he married Myrtle Armstrong.
