I was delighted to find this 'Battley Family Forum' having only been tracing my line of the family for a few months. I have just got back as far as William Battley and Mary Chatfield, who are my G G Grandparents. Their son William and his wife Clara Jane Bryant are my G Grandparents, and my Granfather was their son Frederick William: born 23.3.1891 in Mendlesham, Suffolk (This is how his name appears on his birth certificate, however in the 1901 census he is William Frederick - also on his death certificate too!) Fred was in the Metropolitan Police from 1912 until 1937. He then served in the Transport Police in Portsmouth until he died on 21.4.1946 leaving his widow Stella Olive Clarke (married in June quarter, 1931) with 9 children: 8 boys - including a set of twins - and one daughter. My dad is their third son, David (born 1935)and I am the youngest of two daughters (born 1962).
Needless to say I was bowled over by the vast amount of information I was able to glean from your excellent site! I was so excited to see photos too, especially of William and Clara Jane and also of William Senior's grave stone. I think my dad and I will be taking a trip soon to our ancestral home; I can't wait to show him your website and to share the info with all my uncles and one aunt!!
I hope this stuff is of interest to someone, hopefully to Noeleen and Bruce. I have noticed that there has not been a lot of activity on the site for a while...Please be in touch fellow Battleys, we are a rare breed!
