Have recently been researching the family of 4th great grandfather Jesse Knight of Edgecombe Co, NC, so can help with a bit of this.
Brothers Geraldus and Joseph Batts are sons of Joseph Batts who died 1807 in Edgecombe Co, NC. Geraldus Batts married Elizabeth Knight, daughter of Jesse Knight, about 1813 (eldest son Isaac born late 1813 in NC). They are in Limestone Co, AL in 1820 (state census) and 1822 (Edgecombe deed concerning estate of Jesse Knight). They are in Hickman Co, KY in 1830 and 1840 (eldest female in last may or may not still be Elizabeth). Geraldus remarried to Nancy in Carroll Co, TN 14 Jul 1844, and she is seen in 1850-60 Hickman Co, KY. Duke children and two daughters of marriage to Geraldus in 1850 household. Geraldus died bef 1850 census.
Martha Knight was first married to Mathias Miller bef 1815. Martha is apparently widowed by Jan 1822 (Edgecombe deed concerning estate of Jesse Knight), and likely still widowed in Aug 1825 (petition by Willis Knight concerning estate of brother Jesse Knight). She married Joseph Batts some time after that, and they are also in Hickman Co, KY in 1830 and 1840. Joseph died before 1850 and Martha Knight Miller Batts lived her life out in Hickman and adjacent Graves Co, KY, dying in 1877.
Geraldus and Joseph are the only Batts households in Hickman Co, KY in 1830 and 1840; all males of age to be their sons there in 1850 fit earlier census. These include for Geraldus: Isaac (abt 1813 NC), John S (abt 1822), Geraldus M (abt 1827), and Francis Nathaniel (abt 1833). Apparent daughters Mary (abt 1820) m John Campbell, Lydia A (abt 1826) m William McAlister, and daughters of Nancy, Louisianna (abt 1846) and Martha J (abt 1849). John S and Mary identify state of birth as Georgia, but with both parents dead and known to have been in Limestone Co, AL 1820-22, that is more likely their actual place of birth. Family apparently left there when they were quite young and was in Tennessee for a while in the 1820s. Two other daughters married or died 1830-40.
Joseph Batts was seen in the same locations with his brother. Had a wife and child in 1820 Limestone Co, AL, and as stated, married Martha Knight some time after Aug 1825. Martha is seen with children John T (abt 1828), "likely" Mahala Jane (abt 1835), and John Allen (abt 1842). I was recently contacted and helped with the identification of Martha in response to my recent post about the family of Jesse Knight on the Knight forum.
An executor of the estate of Joseph Batts Sr was Isaac Batts, likely brother. Isaac and wife Lucy were witnesses to the Will. Lucy is Lucy Knight, sister of Jesse Knight. So it appears Geraldus and Joseph had an uncle Isaac who was married to the aunt of their later wives. Will of Joseph Batts names Geraldus, Joseph, William, Martha Harris, Elizabeth, Sarah, and Mary. Land loaned to apparent mistress, Elizabeth Joyner, during her life. All property to be divided among children on her death.
See Knight forum for recent Jesse Knight post for other members of that family. Only daughter Temperance (m Thomas Haines) and Lydia are now unidentified after 1825.
