I have an original letter obtained from Julie Ganis.
It reads as follows:
March 7, 1896
Mr J T Baucom, Walkup NC
Dir Uncle
I seat my self to drop you a few lines to let you know that we are all well, and hoping that when thius few lines comes to hand that tha will find you all well. I have not any news to write more it hard times money scarce.
I want you to m...(spill on paper, looks like "make") me 2 mattocks..and send them to Monroe. You will please leve them at the (Heath Herdsvese? or Neath Nerdsvese ?)Co, and I will git them in passing.I want you to come and see us when you can. So I must close for this time..write soon..
Yous as Evry (Yours as ever)
T. C. Braswell
Most of the writing is quite clear handwriting, except for a small stain on the word make. Also the name of the place to leave the mattocks is clear enough, but hard to determine because of the first letter which could be H
or N.
I do not believe that this signature could possibly be T. C. Baucom, as it is not stained nor smudged. The name J. T. Baucom is spelled out quite clearly at the heading in the same handwriting, and absolutely does not match the T. C. Braswell in the signature.
The spellings are as written.
I am sorry if this disappoints anyone, but it might help someone else, and it is the truth.
I am a descendant of John Thomas Baucom.
