BAUERNFEIND: Trying to find out about this surname in Germany.Anyone know about families moving from the Wermern area?Anyone know about families settling in the Marietta OH area around 1840-1850's?
My GGGrandfather, John George Smith (may have been named Schmidt, Schmitt, etc.) lived most of his life in Blair, Washington, Nebraska.
Obituary shows his birth date as Feb 9, 1841 in Bavaria (one site mentioned Wermern), son of John Jacob (no last name listed) and Eve BAURENFINE.
He came with parents to Marietta, Ohio at 8 years (1849), there till age 21 (1862) when he drove a team for Dr. Clark to Magnolia, Iowa - then a clerk in General Stores in Magnolia and Woodbine, Iowa for six years..to Blair in 1868. He later married Olive J. Flinn who was born in Cayuga Co., NY in 1847.
Mother: Eve BAURENFINE. We've also seen her name listed as BOURNFAIENT, but couldn't begin to pronounce it, nor find it anywhere. Running thru soundex options, I found this forum and believe this spelling to probably be the true spelling, or at least the German Spelling.
Has anyone heard of the Bournfaient name?Could it be from France or Flanders area?Pulling at straws at this point.Hate that I have so much trouble learning about my grandmothers.
