Hi Victor: we've posted similar answers on the Carter Boards, but let me try the full blown answer here.Have no idea how this will appear on your browser. From the great work started by Sue Carter, a few of us have sorted these Williams' out.In short, your William R. who went on to Mississippi did NOT mary Ruth Bean. Also, the Ruth Bean who married in 1801 Grainger county was born 1780 TN and not NH.(She is not yet linked to Capt. William and Bean Station, despite the obvious context). For complete information, please visit our web site and find the Carter-Dunn Clan:
William Carter (no middle) (1775 VA - aft. 1840 TN)
Place of birth as VA? From the census listings for Wm. F. showing both parents from VA.There is a William Carter in both the 1830 and 1840 US Census, TN, White County, all, of the proper age and with the proper number of children to fit the hand-written list mentioned below.William does not appaer in the 1850 census (but Ruth appears with Wayman and Lucy in Wayne county KY - and Ruth herself declares her age at 70 (born 1780) and born in Tennesseee. This information is repeated in the 1860 census, same place. Although census data is never perfect, this can NOT be a Ruth from New Hampshire as some on RootsWeb contend.)
From "The Rev. James Henry Carter" by Sue Carter at the White County TN library - the sister-in-law of researcher Edwin H. Morse had prepared a two page, hand-written list of "The children of my great grandfather Carter" which includes No. 7 William F. - Mar. 13, 1816 and No. 12 James - Jan. 27, 1826 in the total of 16 children listed.
Author Sue Carter makes a very good case for the "possibility" that William Carter and Ruth Bean were the parents of James Henry Carter.Therefor, we all "sink or swim" with the list of 16 children. One has to be particularly swayed by her argument ot the middle name of Montgomery being used on three different descendents. The Zieman researchers add the observation of the repeated use of the Cummin(gs) name and that the date of marriage fits almost perfectly into the date of birth for first born Jasper.
Also ----- from the 1830 US census, TN White County, all, pg. 21 there is a William Carter aged 50-60, with 8 sons and 5 daughters. While the total number of children and approiximate birth dates match the Sue Carter list, totals for the sexes seems backwards. There have been worse census anomalies.
From the 1840 US census, TN White County, all, pg. 5 there is a William Carter aged (again) at 50-60, with 6 sons and 6 daughters.
Then, the set of William Carters listed below - known to have passed through White County - can not, by logical extension, be the William in the 1830 census, nor the teacher/sheriff of the 1850's and 1860's.There is another William F. Carter in early Sparta TN records, connected with the Gilletines who had land annexed by Van Buren county to the south of the Caney Fork. All of our Williams are documented NORTH of the Caney.
