Catherine Bear born Nov. 4, 1815 and died May 8, 1888. She married Byrd (Bert) Wayman BOZARTH born December 16, 1813, Smithvile, White County, Tennessee. This is the correct spelling of Catherine's last name. When it was pronounced it sounded like Baer or Barr. She was a full blooded Cherokee. This came from her son Nathan C. Bozarth. Her son Levi Bozarth married Emmeline McDowell, and the 8th child, Hester Ann Bozarth Essary is my g.grandmother. She talked about the family coming from a tribe of Cherokee called Hosh-kosh. Not sure of the spelling, would anyone know about that? I spelled it like it sounds coming from my Uncle. I was a teen when Hester Ann died, but my dad and Uncle remember her well. She had some stories to tell. One of them was about hiding in a hole under the floor from the Indians. Funny she was Indian. Yet she still hid from some.
Catherine Bear is the daughter of Henry Bear, and Catherine KARNS. Henry Bear's parents were John BEAR born Abt. 1726 and Elizabeth Catrina MILLER December 20, 1734. John's parents Jacob BEAR from Switzerland, married Barbara Unknown. Cherokee Indians Hoshkosh tribe. A name or an area coverin some territory, Something had to be the reason she had told the family the name. This is oral, and I do have it from the horses mouth as well. So not a totally hand me down tradition.
