Joel was b. in KY, according to 1850 Hancock County census. Wife Catherine's maiden name is unknown. She had been married to a Mr. Potter and they had a son Solomon Potter before she m. Joel on 18 Nov 1824. Catherine and Joel had 11 children b. between 1825 and 1852. Catherine was b. 1797 in NJ and died 6 Oct 1855 in OH.Joel remarried 10 Aug 1856 to Saloma Hartman (1842-1897). 8 children are listed for this marriage, between 1857 and 1868. THE ANTECEDENTS OF JOEL ARE VARIED. His father was John Beard, reputedly a land surveyor (no proof yet).I have birthplaces of VA, PA and MD for the father! My hunch is Maryland. Imagine you are a land surveyor and the President just opened up the Louisian Purchase lands. You might have children born in various places, as you worked, and you would also know where the best land was to buy. I don't know where Joel's eldest brother (James)was born -- perhaps MD, PA, VAThe next child Rebecca was born in North Carolina. Next child Samuel probably was born in NC. Next child Bennett Benjamin Maxwell Beard was b. 19 Feb 1797 in Yadkin Co, NC according to his pension application papers filed in Allegan Co, Michigan. Joel was born in KY in 1797.The rest of the children John, Amos (my ancestor), Adam, Sarah, Elijah S.and Ann were born in Ohio. Several of these Beards ended up in Michigan, probably on land that father John had scouted out. Some stayed in Ohio on various tracts of their father's lands. My Beard family moved to Lawrence County, Illinois after the Civil War. Father John's wife's name was Sarah. Her surname may have been Maxwell. Known collateral surnames in the first generation are: Long (x2),Ebright, Ross, (Potter), Hartman, Duvall, Price, Soule, Smith (x2), Egbert, and Stout.PLASE SEE NEXT POSTED MESSAGE FOR THE LAND HOLDINGS OF JOHN BEARD IN OHIO.
