My grandmother was Martha "Mattie" Elizabeth Selena Tavel BEARD, and she told me that her g-uncle was Henry BEARD of the CSS HUNLEY; as well as my g-grandfather telling other family members this same story, we have always claimed the relationship.
Henry BEARD b. ukn, was the brother of Barnwell Preston BEARD b.c. 1831 SC. Barnwell's father moved to AL. Barnwell showed up in SC in 1855 on a land record. He disappeared bet. 1875-1880. His wife Anna Campbell BEARD was listed as "widow" in 1880. However, B.P. BEARD returned to Charleston, SC to be buried in 1905! I am in the process of finding the funeral home that handled the return of the body. His residence during those missing years may give a clue as to where other family members may be found.
I have found the name as BEAIRD and BAIRD, but more often as BEARD.
I am in the process of searching Barnwell Co, SC records to connect other BEARDs that served during the Civil War and to ultimately find the parents of "Barney" and Henry.
I am presently an inactive member of the SCLA and UDC.
Any information on Henry or his family would be greatly appreciated. I have yet to find others who claim descendancy to Henry.
