Gregory Dee "Greg" Beard, 81, passed away Friday, August 20, 2004, at his home in Tell City. Greg was born November 22, 1922, in Hawesville, Kentucky, the son of the late John G. and Lena A. (Morris) Beard. Also preceding him in death was a brother and sister-in-law, James "Jack" and Anna Beard, a brother in infancy, a sister, Helen Beard, a nephew, Dee Beard and an uncle, Gilbert Beard. A World War II Army veteran serving with the 82nd Airborne in China, Burma and India (CBI), he was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2939 and American Legion Post #213. Greg was also a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council #1172. He married the former Helen Bryant August 31, 1946, at St. Paul in Tell City. Retiring from General Electric in 1967, Greg was the owner and operator of the Sportsman Inn in Tell City for more than 50 years.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen (Bryant) Beard; two daughters, Barbara Wiley and her husband, Jim, Plainfield, Indiana, Verna Beard and her friend, Brian Badger, Lewisport, Ky.; two grandsons, Jim Wiley, Indianapolis, Indiana, and David Wiley, Mooresville, Indiana; a niece, Cindy Ferguson, Bowling Green, Kentucky; and a nephew, Jim Beard, Sanford, Michigan.
Funeral services will be 9:30 a.m. Monday, August 23, 2004, at St. Paul Catholic Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery at Tell City with military rites. Rev. Carl Deitchman OSB will officiate. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday at Huber Funeral Home, 1139 12th Street, Tell City, Indiana where there will be a Knights of Columbus memorial service at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
