I have a land patent page 154 from Ruth Herndon Shields book written in 1971 on the Barbee's. The name is barby, barber back then. They owned thousands of acres by the 1790's. (in North Carolina) which they donated to University of north Carolina in Chapel Hill. There is a Barbee park in the research triangle.
wm Beaumont donated land to his godson william Barby in 1690(middlesex va.)
"to all etc.Whereas Now ye that I the said Francis Nicholoson Esq.Governor etc do with the advice & consent of the Council Of State Accordingly Give and Grant unto William Barby 200 acres of land .
One hundred acres of land part thereof conveyed by William Beaumont to Patrick Miller conveyed to the above named William Barby by deed dated the fourth day of January 1689 and 100 acres of land the residue being given by the said William Beaumont unto william barby the younger the son of the above named William Barby by deed of gift dated the first day of january 1690 all which said two hundred acres of land being part of one thousand acres of land granted unto Perregrine Bland by patent dated the 10th of August 1642 and since granted to Hope Bland daughter & heir of the aforesaid Perregrine Bland by patent dated the 19th of Jan 1650 and by the will and testament of the said Hope Bland mother of the aforesaid William Beaumont did give & bequeath the same unto him the said William Beaumont & also(?)(descended?)to him as son & heir to his sd mother To have and to hold etc.To bee held etc yielding & paying etc.
Dated the sixth day of June 1699. Signed ffr. Nicholson
William Barby his patent for two hundred acres
of land in Middlesex County, E. Jennings Deputy Sec'ty"
Foreword of Cavaliers & Pioneers by Nugent"renewals of original patents by the Regal Government is often considered confusing and the tendency to accept each entry as a new patent is so prevalent, attention is called to renewals, as cited in these abstracts which greatly reduces the actual number of acres to individuals and indicates many conveyances were Merely Confirmations Of Earlier Titles."
The Rappahannock River is the Northeast boundary of middlesex . the piankatank river is the Southwest boundary of Middlesex.
I am typing this from A Study of the Barbee Families Compiled by Ruth herndon Shields , Belle Lewter West & Kathryn crossley Stone.
I Would have to fax the whole page and I have not figured out how to scan and E mail yet.
