My family have been in Ireland for over 300 years. They travelled here in the mid to late 17th century from England. My GG Uncle emigrated to the States in the latter part of the 19th century. He was named James Beckett and came from near the town of Moira, County Down, close to Ballinderry where the family home is reputed to be.
My great grandfather's sister, Matilda Beckett married a John Beckett. According to information gather a couple of years ago from a cousin Paul Beckett who visited Ireland in that time period, this John Beckett had a brother, given name Herbert. John Beckett was supposed to be a distant relative to Matilda. I have been on the verge of finding more about this "distant relative" information a few times. No one seems to want to talk about it. Matilda is buried in a Catholic cemetery as per her great grandson Bobby Burns now deceased. Matida's grand daughter Sarah Ellen Beckett, from son Thomas Beckett, married Robert Burns, of the Catholic faith. When Matilda Beckett's son Walter Matthew Beckett was a minister in the Church of Ireland, buried at the Middle Church, a single man.
As I fit a piece here and there, Moria appears to have been home for various family members from time to time. Have not yet been able to actually place anyone there as yet. Just a once in a while bit of "gossip" to that effect. I met A Sandra Craig nee Beckett, at her home, Largy Rd., Crumblin, who had an unmarried Aunt Margaret, I believe living with her, both introduced by Bobby Burns. I could not get how the relationship went, being not to pushy, trying to allow this information to present its self. Again, seems to be some hesitation on presenting this information. From the present Presbyterian side of the Irish family, appears hesitation in presenting this information. At any rate, does any of Matida's and her husband John Beckett give you any clues as to any ties to John's family. Will send my e-mail as to large to post here.
