I'm looking for ancestors of Edmund Bickford/Beckford b.Salem,MA 1735,d.Sedgewick,ME. 1800's. Supposedly owned 1/2 of Monhegan before the revolutionary war, but sold out and moved to Lyndboro,NH. According to his grandson, Calvin Bickford's diary, he changed the name to Beckford after a conversation with an Ebenezer Beckford, who told him the name had been Beckford in England. The presence of a Beckford family in Essex Co. makes me wonder if the story is accurate. History of Monhegan has a Benjamin Bickford selling the island to a Trefethren around the time of the revolutionary war, but apparently Bickford died and the deal wasn't consummated until sometime after the war. Any info would be gratefully received.
