We have a handsome photograph of this man, who married my gr-gr-grandparents on April 3, 1872, in Athens, Georgia. Beckwith was the Bishop of Georgia at the time (Episcopal), living in Savannah, but he came up to Athens to preside over the wedding of Mary Ann Lamar Cobb (daughter of Gen. Howell Cobb, C.S.A.) to Judge Alexander Smith Erwin (on a Wednesday afternoon!). I guess they didn't worry in those days about friends needing to get off work for the weekend!
