Seeking info on the ancestors and descendants of Arunah (or Amasa) BECKWITH (b. 1802 in CT) and Sarah E. SILLS (b. c1810 in Canada). Their children were:
Rachel BECKWITH, b. 1827 in Canada Mary Ann BECKWITH, b. 1829 in Canada Phoebe BECKWITH, b. c1833 in Canada Matilda BECKWITH, b. c1835 in Canada Henry BECKWITH, b. c1836 in Canada Catherine BECKWITH, b c1840 in Canada John Sills BECKWITH, b. c1840 in Canada Arunah BECKWITH, Jr., b. c1842 in Canada Adelaide BECKWITH, b. c1846 in Canada
The children are all believed to have been born in Ontario, Canada.
I have particular interest in Matilda BECKWITH. I have been trying for a very long time now to determine the maiden name of my gg-g'mother, the wife of George WILLIAMS. In 1860, George and Matilda WILLIAMS lived in Clinton Twp., DeKalb Co., IL with their 4 yr old son, Darius H. (my g-g'father) and a 2 mo old unnamed infant son. I've been unable to find anything to suggest what Matilda's maiden name might have been -- until now. Yesterday I found a marriage record in the Illinois State Marriage Index online (thru GenWeb) for:
George WILLIAMS & Matilda BECKWITH, m. 25 Dec 1855 in DeKalb Co., IL
Besides the names & location, the DATE is the very strong evidence that this couple are "my" George & Matilda because their first child, Darius, was born on 3 Oct 1856 -- which is just a week or so more than 9 months from the marriage date.
In the 1860 Census, Matilda WILLIAMS' age is given as 25, and her birthplace is given as Canada, which makes her a very likely candidate for a match with Matilda BECKWITH. However, there is a small difficulty with this point because in that SAME census, Matilda BECKWITH, ae 25, is listed at home with her parents, Arunah & Sarah BECKWITH in nearby Victor Twp., DeKalb Co., IL.
Does anyone have an explanation? Was there another BECKWITH family in close proximity that had a daughter named Matilda who was b. c1835 in Canada??
If Matilda BECKWITH, dau of Arunah and Sarah, IS my gg-g'mother and wife of George WILLIAMS, my calculations say that in 1860, she was married with children, so why would she be listed with her parents?? I'm very confused. It would have to be one WHALE of a coincidence in light of the marriage record and what I know to be fact about my g-g'father, Darius WILLIAMS.
Can anyone help? I sure hope so!
A hearty "Thank you!" in advance to any/all who reply. You may post here, or email me directly. If using email, please put "BECKWITH" in the subject line.
