I am looking for information regarding a Beckwith family in the Tenallytown (Tenleytown) area of DC in the 1860s and 1870s. In the 1870 census, William Shilford (the man I believe to be my great, great grandfather) is living with a Beckwith family in Tenallytown. Although William does not appear to be married to Elizabeth Beckwith, she is listed as having two children. The ages of these children correspond to the ages of the children who move to Albany, NY with William and his wife. I believe that Elizabeth Beckwith may be the wife who shows up in Albany with William (although her names changes to Mary).
In the 1860 census in Tenallytown in DC, Martha Beckwith (42; white; born in MD) is living with the following "mulatto" children: Joseph (12; born in MD), Elizabeth (11; born in MD), Burgis (10; born in MD), and Dora (2; born in MD). At all other times, Elizabeth/Mary (if they are the same person) is listed as white in the census records.
Was there a Beckwith plantation in MD? Does anyone know anything about Beckwiths in DC? Any information would be appreciated.
