Sylvester,"Vester" as the family called him,was from Ochlochnee, Thomas Co., GA, but married Grace Crutchfield--probably in Leon, Co., FL-- sometime around 1926.They stayed in Leon county for a little while, as they are there in the 1930 census, before moving to Tampa where Sylvester died in 1961.
In the 1910 census for Mitchell County Ga, E.D 114, sheet 16,Vol.70,Mary is given on a "family sheet" as 26 years old and a William Carington aged 15 is listed as her grandson. It says that there are 3 boarders in the residence. I found Sylvester, age 6, on an "individual sheet"--kind of like an add-on--in the household with her. It was a little strange, but that's what was there.
I have nothing really to go on about his parentage. Just who he listed on his SS-5 for his social security application. Who "Tobe" Beckwith was or why the children didn't take his name is a mystery. I will be getting a copy of Alred's SS-5 soon and hopefully the father's name will be there and give more information than Sylvester's.
Mary is listed as "married" in the 1920 census, but she is the head of household in 1910 and 1920.Also, Hettie Tilley is listed as her mother, not mother-in-law. Looks like the possibility of finding who Mary's father was is going to be another mystery too. They certainly didn't leave much information to go on.
