Thanks for your reply.I've been trying to find out information for my grandmother for some time and keep hitting a brick wall.I have learned some additional information since I first posted the message about her.
On her application for a social security card, my grandmother (Mary Behuniak) listed her father as "Metro" Behuniak and her mother as "Tillie".She also said her date of birth was July 10, 1897.Her marriage certificate lists her dob in 1900, and her death certificate lists it as 1899. The SSN application and death certificate say she was born in Ansonia, CT.However, the Ansonia Town records show no record for any of those years.
Also, on her application for a marriage license (in the City of New York), she listed her father as "Dimitry" and her mother as "Theila" (the exact spelling is difficult to read...it was written in an elaborate script). Both the SSN application and marriage license application ask for the mother's maiden name...she listed her last name as Behuniak on both. The witnesses to the marriage were Harry Behuniak and Samuel Garagus. My mom and aunts and uncles remember her referring to her Uncle Harry several times.
That's were the official trail ends.I've talked to my aunt and uncle and have heard some different stories.I'm not sure what is true.Supposedly, her parents gave her to an aunt and uncle when she was very young. She was raised by them (unfortunately, I don't know which aunt and uncle).Uncle Harry or someone on her side had a restaurant in NY.My grandfather (Steve Marshalick, or Stefan Marszalek from Nowicia, Galicia) worked there. Also, my grandmother was first engaged to a priest (Ukrainian Catholic priests could marry back then) but he was killed in some sort of mining accident when he went in to give last rites to some injured miners (I don't know what kind of mining it was). She married my grandfather on May 12, 1917 at St. Elias in Brooklyn.(Incidently, the priest listed them both as being from Galicia.)Sometime after my eldest aunt, Stella, was born (in Jersey City, NJ - godparents: Henry Nicotich and Olga Ryan), they moved to central Pennsylvania (Excelsior). That is where my grandfather's parents and siblings settled when they they came to the US.My aunt told me she remembered some of my grandmother's family visiting in Excelsior once or twice but doesn't remember much more.
And that's about it.I don't know if any of these other names or places are familiar to you. Please let me know if they are.Feel free to e-mail me directly. Thanks again for responding. It's nice to hear from a Behuniak!
