Alanson Bemis 1824-1905 Vt.-NY-Pa.-Wi
I need help. Does anyone know the father of Alanson Bemis. Alanson was born August 8, 1824 in New York or Vermont. He died October 18, 1905 in the county Asylum in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. He married Mathilda Kent (or Kant or Cant) before 1850. Mathilda was born September 7, 1826 in New York or Vermont and died April 13, 1905 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Alanson is buried in Rienzi Cemetery in an unmarked grave and Mathilda is buried in Homiston Cemetery and has a stone. Alanson and Mathilda had Mary C. and William David both born in 1850, Lewis Lorenzo born 2/13/1851 or 1853, Eliza L. born 1854, Charles A. born 5/4/1857, Cyrus A. born 3/13/1859 and Riley Alonzo born 4/13/1862 all born in Sparta Township, Pa. I know William, Cyrus and Riley all went with their parents to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin in 1872. Cyrus obit states that he came to Wisconsin at the age of 17 and resided in Rosendale with an uncle.
Charles spells his name Beemus and so does his off springs. I have seen Alanson's last name spelled many ways, Bemus, Beemus, Beamus, Bemis, Beamis, Beemis. Riley, on his marriage registration he states that his father was Alonzo.
Alanson's and Mathilda's parents were born in Vermont.
Alanson was listed in the 1871Crawford County Tax Records but was not listed in 1872.
The record of Alanson in the County Insane Asylum spelled his name as Alamson Bemus, date of admission was April 5, 1905. It said he was born in Vermont. His obit said he was born in New York and moved to Fond du Lac when a boy. I found Alanson Bemis and family in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census in Crawford Co., Spartansburg, Pa. His occupation was cooper, farmer and shoe maker.
I looked on the tax records from 1848 thur 1859 and Alanson was not listed. I assume he didn't own anything. In 1871 tax record he owned one horse and one dog.
We beleive that Lorenzo A. Bemis born abt. 1821 in Vermont and died 12/19/1850 in Rosendale, Wi. might be Alanson's brother. This could not be the uncle that Cyrus lived with, because he didn't go to Wisconsin until 1870's. Finding out this uncle could be the clue that I need.
