Elwood BENDER CROCKER of the CROCKER Art Museum
Elwood BENDER CROCKER was born 1870 in Reno, NV. Elwood's parents were William S. and Elizabeth DAY BENDER who died when he was a baby. He was adopted by Edwin and Margaret RHODES CROCKER. Margaret was a relative. Margaret was born in 1823 in Stark Co., OH. She was the youngest of 12 children. Her father died soon after her birth. Her mother died in 1848. Margaret RHODES went to South Bend, IN to live with her sister, Ann RHODES BENDER who was married to Jacob (?) BENDER from Stark/Summit Co., OH. Edwin CROCKER made a fortune with the founding of the Central Pacific Railroad. His wife, Margaret RHODES CROCKER left her collection of art to the city of Sacramento (Crocker Art Museum). Elwood BENDER CROCKER moved to Elmira, New York where his step-sister, Jennie Louise CROCKER FASSAT lived. There he married Elizabeth SLEE in 1896 and had a daughter, Margaret Eleanor CROCKER, b 1900, married Jerome Bonaparte MALTBY in 1924. My interest in this is the two RHODES sisters, Margaret and Ann, and who there parents and siblings were.
