Sharon:
I am all for simplifying this research. As I stated earlier, when these boards first started, there seemed to be an emphasis on the southern Benefiels, not too much on the northern ones. I assure you I did not intend to muddy the water.
Regarding the addenda to Ms. Stout's book, do they mention anything else about Hiram W. Benefiel, son of John and Mary Spore Benefiel?
Some questions I'd like answered by current researchers:
Were Col. John and William Benefiel brothers?Eliza Benefiel Trimble's famous 1906 letter says that William's parents were from Scotland.So....from memory, that begs the question:
Were the two men mentioned above brothers of George Benefiel?strong geographical evidence plus the way they all named their children leads me to believe they were brothers.
Col. JOhn and William Benefiel (my ancestor), lived "next door" to each other on the Sullivan county census of 1820.William (1763)'s son, JOHN, lived in Illinois in 1820, along with Col. John's son Robert.
Who is STROUD Benefiel(d), listed in early Bourbon Kentucky records with William (presumed to be "my" William, who was in Kentucky when it was still a part of Virginia, and was a "Spy for Lewis Wetzel", and an Indian fighter.
I don't know who dropped the "d" or where, or when, but it was fightin' words to pronounce it Benefield to my grandfather, whose mother was Minnie Benefiel, Hiram's daughter.
