Re: Frederick Benfer (son of Johann Benfer & Mary Scharp)
Hi, Frank. Cynthia O'Conner and I just discovered this week that we are probably second-cousins (or is that third?). We've been trying to fill in blanks for each other too.
The information I have, and admittedly I have just begun to search, is that Johann Georg Benfer was born March 21, 1745 in Westphalia, Germany. It was still Prussia then, I think. That's a bit further north than Palatine. I'm wondering where you found your information because I am justing learning about the difficult job of verifying the accuracy of the information we find.
The baby of his family, he moved to the colonies in 1766 (maybe on the ship "Betsy"), fought in the American Revolution, and was a blacksmith. He married Mary Catherine Scharff (my great+grandmother) in 1776, having 7 children with her. She died in 1790 and is buried in Kratzerville. He then married Mary "Maria" Magdalene Miller in 1793 and had 5 more children with her. Maria was born in 1764, died in 1832 and is buried in New Berlin with Johann. He died on April 23, 1818 and was buried in New Berlin, PA, near where my Uncle Kermit and my Dad were born and raised. My Dad was a speaker at the ceremony when the DAR dedicated a marker for Johann's grave. Our family is descended from the 1st wife, but I don't know through which of the sons.
