Bennicks in the UK
My gt gt grandmother was Mary Ann Bennick, descended from 2 brothers who were refugees from France and who came to Poole, Dorset during the C18th.One married (my ancestor), one did not. They quarrelled and the unmarried one (name unknown) went abroad and did well, but then returned to England wanting a reconciliation and to leave his estate to his brother. On arriving in England he was taken ill and was taken by his valet to a hotel. Here he made a will in his brother's favour and so died. The valet took the will and impersonated the brother, thus stealing the estate, which was called "Bloomfield".The family crest was two doves and an olive branch.
Some details of this reached my ancestors but they were unable to prove the story in court, so lost the estate.
This story was recorded by my gt gt uncle, Thomas Harding, who heard it from the family as he grew up.He reckoned it occurred at least 2 generations before his grandfather, John Bennick of Portsea, Hants.
Thomas was the son of Mary Ann Bennick who married Thomas Harding29 March 1807 at Portsea, Hampshire.
Does this story ring any bells with other Bennick?
