I have some info. that you may find useful...my family is Mi'kmaq and our family name has changed over the years, depending on who was in charge of the census records. the original name was Pem'i'nou'it'e, changed to Pem'mee'nau'weet, then to Pem'men'wick, then to Pom'i'nout, to Pem'i'nu'it, to Bem'i'nu'it, to Benoit, to Bennett. I am of the Bemenuit Paul line of the Heritary Grand Chiefs of the Mi'kmaq from NS, Canada.
I now reside in the US in NM. So you see how a surname can change depending on who's keeping the record. eh? My family lineage can be traced back to 1655 according to the French and English chroniclers. Am I considered a Benoit as well?
MORE TO COME. AB______________________________
