Re: BENOIT, Paul 1600?
From what I understand one is Marcel is a descendant of a French Huguenot while the other, me, the Quebec one, is a not so active Roman Catholic. Benoit and Benoist is a very popular name after it was decided that all families should have a name in france to help the King collect taxes and recruit for the army. Some families, not having a trade or profession (Meunier, Lapierre etc), or perhaps under the influence of their parish priest, choose the name of the saint, St Benoit de Nursey who was very important at that time. Happened in the 1550's in France and the other countries followed suit, such a fine idea. There are benoits in Italy, Germany, Poland, etc.
I'm wondering if the Hugenot Benoit came on his own or with the French army during the revolution.
