Pierre Benoit dit Desrosiers received 50 livres at the time of their marriage. This royal grant took place 8 October 1700.A quick search reveals that he did not marry under the name of Desrosiers. The marriage act remains unfound but happened in New France.
In 1702 Pierre was a “hussier” or sheriff for St-Ours. At that time Marie-Anne Couillard brutally murdered her husband “ .... Lachaume” with the help of her lover Pierre Viau dit Larose a soldier of the company St–Ours . The murder took place 28 February 1702.
As “hussier” Pierre Benoit investigated this murder and Marie-Anne Couillard confessed to her crime.
There was no notary in the St-Pie and Contrecoeur areas. The governor appointed Pierre Benoit age 34, as notary he was required to bring the couple for judgement at Ville-Marie. Pierre Benoit was appointed notary 14 June 1702
Pierre Viau dit Larose was condemned to death and died by hanging at Quebec on 17 October 1702.
Marie-Anne Couillard escaped justice either by escaping to New England with the help of her uncle Pierre Laporte. The latter was also accused of killing her. Either way she was not brought tp justice in Montreal
