Same here, been looking at Benoits since 1984 and this is a new "dit" to me. Would suggest that this may be because the family came from Beauharnois of course. French Canadians often used this to differentiate from other Beniots that immigrated from an other area. Example if most of the Benoits came from St Luc and St Jean, this family was could be the unique one from Beauharnois.This might be used. Really means there is no relationship to the others who settled in the same general area. In such a case, the Beauharnois would be unique to New York, not used in Quebec. It would mean that Beauharnois should be the first place to search.
