I recently broke through a long-standing "brick wall", and found the birth registration for my ancestor Samuel KING. It was at Dr. Williams' Library (Protestant Dissenters' Registry)--registered 21 years after the birth!
The format is different than Parish Registers. It gives the mother's father's name (Herbert KING), and witnesses to the birth (Mary BENSLEY, Bolt Court, Fleet Street, [London]).
Mary turns out to be another daughter of Herbert CLARKE, and so is Samuel KING's aunt. She married Thomas BENSLEY and had (it appears) at least 9 children in London, also registered as non-conformists.
(Presumably Samuel KING as an adult named two of his children after these BENSLEY aunt, uncle, or cousins.)
Mary BENSLEY also was witness to the birth of a daughter Mary to John MASON and his wife, Mary daughter of John PRYOR of Rothley, Leicestershire, in 1790.
Any connections to MASON, PRYOR or CLARKE on your BENSLEY family tree?--Jane Elderfield
