Descendants of Babel Benson of WV, TN, and KY
Recently I was able to search courthouse records in Todd County, Kentucky, where Babel Benson died about 1840.He did not leave a will, and I did not find a document that named all his heirs. The records do indicate that William Ervin/Ervine Benson of Todd County was a son, and John S. Benson of Illinois was a son. The record naming John S. Benson was a power of attorney recorded in the deed books. Ellen Benson is listed as purchaser of a number of items from the estate, including the family bible, so she is likely a daughter.I'm hoping to get back to Todd County in the near future to do some more research, as I'm not sure I located all the court documents. Apparently there was a suit filed between the heirs of Babel Benson involving a dispute over the sale of the land and slaves that had belonged to him.
I am a descendant of William Ervine Benson who married Martha Adeline Wilkins in Todd County in 1831.Their son Sylvester C. Benson married Arwilda/Alwilda Catharine Jobe in Graves County, Kentucky in 1857, and moved to Stoddard C. MO in 1860. Their only surviving child, Amanda C. Benson born in 1860 in Stoddard Co MO, is my great grandmother.Sylvester C. Benson enlisted in 1862 in the Union Army in MO and died at Benton/Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis MO in 1863.
I would be happy to trade information and copies of Todd Co. documents with other researchers of this family. I am particularly interested in learning more about the ancestors of Babel Benson.
