1843 death of Major Thomas Benson, Greenville, S.C.

Greenville,S.C., Republican,April 7, 1843
_____"Died on the 23rd ult., at his
residence in Greenville District in
consequence of an injury received
in a fall from a horse. Major Thomas
Benson, in the 82nd year of his age.
_____He was a native of Virginia
where he entered the service of
his country during the Revolutionary
War. in which he continued till its
close. He then removed to South
Carolina where he has since continued
_____He filled for a number of
years an important military office,
the duties of which he discharged
to the satisfaction of those under
his command and of the State.
_____For eight years he represented
Greenville District in the Senate,
where he uniformly supported republican
principles and sustained a high
character for honesty and independence.
_____He has left a numerous family to
lament his death. They will ever remember
him as a kind husband, an indulgent father
and master and an excellent friend."
