Re: Thomas Bentley of MD and Rowan, Lincoln Cos., NC
Hi Allan, thanks for posting the Thomas Bentley and Isaac Meekins 1765 Tyrrel Co., NC will data.At the present time I do not believe the Thomas Bentley in the 1754 Virginia militia is the same Thomas Bentley who was residing in Frederick County, MD, in the early 1750's and who later moved to the Forks of the Yadkin area of Rowan County, NC, which is now Davie County, with wife Hannah (maiden name unknown).
As far as the Thomas Bentley listed as the grandson of Isaac Meekins I dare not venture or even speculate a guess as to whom this Thomas Bentley's parents may have been.I would say he ties in with the early Virginia Bentleys.Isaac Meekins was from the Dorchester Co. area of southern Maryland while Thomas Bentley of Rowan County came from the Frederick Co. area of upper Maryland.Quite a few Frederick Co. families came to the Forks of the Yadkin, including many of Thomas Bentley's neighbors such as the Lewis, and Whitaker familes.
The Forks of the Yadkin area in NC was a hotbed of Tory or Loyalist activity during the Revolution. As stated in some of my previously posted reseach, both Thomas and his son, Benjamin, sold supplies to the Revolutionary cause and later swore an oath of allegiance to the state of NC.This leads me to believe Thomas's family, and possibly some of his neighbors were of the German Baptist, or Dunkard, faith since Quakers "affirmed" an oath, not swearing. I believe the reason Thomas's family left the forks of the Yadkin was due to political reasons when they removed to the present day area of Lincoln County, NC.
Allan, thanks for the posts.Perhaps they will tie in eventually.
