Carol,

Thanks for the lengthy reply. FYI with further research I have determined that the "Green Berry" you noted in Hawkins Co, TN in 1860 wasn't even actually a Berry. If you look in the 1850 census in the exact same area, you'll see he is identified there as "Greenberry Watts" with the family, age, origin etc all lined up the same. Obviously the census taker in 1860 goofed and elided his last name.

I'm still looking elsewhere for my William Berry's origins. He clearly had landed in central TN (Grundy, Coffee, Warren, etc) by 1850 but prior to that, I'm not sure. May have even lived at some point in Kentucky before he got to TN, I'm just not sure.

What I do think I know:
Father: William Berry b est 1790 in NC/VA/SC (per various censuses)
Mother: Micah(?) Powell b est 1805 in VA

Sons:
John D Berry b 1820's in NC/TN (per various censuses)
Green A Berry b 1820's in GA/NC/TN (per various censuses)

From the proximity, age, etc plus the appearance of the given name "Green" I would suspect that the William Berry I am looking for may have had a brother named Green, because in the 1850 census for Coffee Co TN where William Berry (age 55)lived as well as son Green Berry (age 22 living with parents) and grandson Green Berry (age 3 living next door with father John Berry), there is another Green Berry (age 61) living in the same county, also like William listed as being from NC. This Green Berry is a blacksmith, has a wife Charlotte (born 1790 in NC) and daughter Martha (born 1831 in TN).

Do you have any info that might tie in that specific Green Berry born about 1789 in NC to your extended list of Berrys? Thanks for checking.

Still looking,

David
