Hello!
I just discovered this forum. I am only beginning to research "Berthelot" (my mother's maiden name)and already have a few names in Loiret (45). The family tradition says the origin might be from Normandy in the years 1660.
I would like to discover which ancestor (s) went to the states as there are some berthelot in Louisiana and alabama, discovering cousins over the ocean would be nice.Would you share the origin of your ancestor you found in France?
btw "berthelotte" is the mere feminisation of the name, current until somewhere in the 1800s. A berthelot girl could get named berthelotte, and her descendants keep it.
In the All-day saints archives, I saw a berthelot transformed in "bartlett" when coming over to england : that sounds near enough the usual english try at pronuncing the name.
According to some, berthelot comes from "bertaud", a german first name meaning "strong". anyway it sounds "northern", I mean north of the Loire river at least.
I never encountered a french "bertelot" without the "h", except descendants from northern people who had come from the flandres region (northern Belgium and netherlands approx.) : there the name is more often "berteloot", and french tend to skip one of the "o" very quickly.
Just sharing...
Marie-Françoise
