Beginner instructions

Hi everyone,

I'm only starting to track down my grandmother's family. She's a Bertol as well, and we live in the Philippines (now how she got there, I have no idea). I've heard of a Bertol Family gathering in Italy as well, in fact, if I'm not mistaken, my uncle, Antonio Bertol Sotelo was invited to it.

I really don't know where to start looking. My Gramma's turned 80 this year, and she doesn't know much about her background. Can anyone give me a hint as to where to start?
