Hi Ed,
I'd like to introduce another possible branch. There must be a connection with my Bertsch family. There are too many coincidences for anything else.
My ggg grandfather John Harley (Horla) b. 1777 Wurtenburg and his wife Margaret Bertsch also born in Wurtenburg immigrated to Columbiana Co. Ohio in 1835 with their sons Jacob F. Harley b. 1831 Wurtenburg, Alexander Harley b. 1820 Wurtenburg andChristian Harley b. 1822 Baden Baden. Margaret and John are buried in Crawford Co. Ohio.
Christian Harley m. Regina Stelzer 18 Dec. 1842 and they had 12 children. One of their daughters Caroline Louise Harley b. 20 Dec 1845 Florence, Ohio m. John Bertsch of Grand Rapids Mi. How and if Caroline is directly related to Margaret Bertsch is unknown at this time. Caroline's brother, Clark Clinton Harley b. 1855 Florence, Ohio was my g grandfather and the Bertsch family visited the Harley family here on the West Coast in the early 1900's.
The Harley family also located in Defiance, Ohio, where my grandfather Clinton Strong Harley was born, and in Grand Rapids, Mi.
I have numerous letters and pictures dated in the 1890's from a John Bertsch in Grand Rapids who owned the Michigan Leather Company (earlier the Cappon and Bertsch Leather Co. ).
In the 1900 census for Grand Rapids there is a John Bertsch b. 1834, wife Caroline b. 1844 and one of their children is named Harley. This appears to fit.
Does anyone know have additional information on this branch of the Bertsch family and whether or not there is a connection between Margaret Bertsch Harley and Caroline Louise Harley Bertsch?
Thank you.
