Am searching for ancestry of Lucius H. "Luke" Bessant who lived in the Phoenix City area of Alabama and died there about 1954. It is said that his father was Johnny A. Bessant who was born in France. Now, the censuses of 1850, 1860 and 1870 show a Jno. A.B.Besson in Barbour County, just south of the Phoenix City area. I am wondering if "Bessant" is actually the same as "Besson", with the French pronunciation of "Bessant" sounding like it should be spelled "Besson" (by someone unfamiliar with the spelling, like a census taker)???Or, perhaps a family member changed the spelling from "Besson" to "Bessant". Can anyone help me with this?
