Rev. Frank M. Best died Mar 16, 1997 @75
The Revd Frank M. Best, MA FHG FHS
Frank was one of the founder Trustees of the Institute when its charitable status was established in 1964 and his dealth on 16th March 1997 at the age of 75 was a shock to us all. He retired from the institute sone few years ago because of the distance from his home at Bishop's Frome where he continued an active life in Frome Valley parishes long after his retirement.
He was at school at Bloxham and joined the Royal Regiment of Artillery at the age of eighteen. He served in India and throughout World War 11, attaining the rank of captain. After the war, he went to Lincoln Coleege, Oxford, recieving his M>A> in 1949 and going on the the Theological College at Chestnut. He was ordained a deacon in 1950 and priested the following year.He went on to St. Philip's at Evington, Leicester, where he met his wift Christinia and they married in Coronation year, soon setting off with the SPG to India. After some three years at Ranchi, they returned to England and went first to Gorting-on-Sea and then to Horam in Sussex, which was better for Christina's health.
Frank's association with the foundation if the School of Family History in 1957 was initiated at meetings at Horam. There he ran that delighted little parish and continued his sketch-books of the countryside and the people in it,as well as his very competent heraldic designs.Close friendships sprung up and were strengthened even after he was appointed rector of Sibson in Leicestershire in 1963.As advisor to the Leicester Diocese on heraldic and artistic matters.Frank"s contact with the Institute continued by post and his visits to Canterbury were frequent. No one can remember him ever missing a quarterly meeting of the Trustees from 1964 to 1988.
Frank Best was a competent lecturer, a meticulous scholar of considerable modesty, and a man of exemplary patience. From Sibson, Frank was moved to help the Bishop of Chelmsford sort out some difficult parishes in Essex and after a few years became rector of Wicken Bonhunt in 1978.He moved fron there to Bishop's Frome in 1986.
The Rev. Frank Milner Best had a room in the old library her dedicated to him when he retired as a Trustee. It remains "The Best Room" in his memory, though such a good man surely has another in a better place.
This was printed in the Midland Ancesttor with a picture of Frank .
Does anyone know if Frank had a family or who his parents were?
