My John Best
My John Best was born either in 1818 or 1820, depending on which census you believe.
John was born in Hesse Darmstadt Germany, and a christening record was found for a Johann Philipp Best in 1818, in Hesse Darmstadt Germany, which give as the parents Johann Best and Catheraine Schmidt.
By 1844 John was in Chambersburg, Franklin Co. PA, married to a Rebecca Best, No maiden name, and they had a son, John Best.
John and Rebecca were listed in the US census of 1850 Estimated birth year 1820,and again in 1860, estimated birth year 1818.
John and Rebecca had 8 known children, John b. 1844, Elizabeth b. 1846, Henry b. 1849, George b. 1852, Mary b. 1854, Amanda b. 1856, Edward, b. 1858, and William Robert b. 1860.
All born in Pennsylvania.
After 1860 the birth of William nothing is heard of John and Rebecca. I have not found a marriage record, or death record for either of them.
I have not been able to find any immigration information for John. Even though we know that he arrived in the colonies before 1844, Probably about 1840, at age 21 or 22.
John was a farmer in Franklin Co. but we have no land records to or from him.
After the 1860 census there are no other census records of him and Rebecca.
I am desperately seeking and information on John and Rebecca Best, which might help meto complete this family.
I am descended through his son John who married Caroline Posenfelter before 1869, and their son Harry W. b. 1879 d. 1949 in PA. Harry is my wife's grandfather.
This is a very short line of Best's in the US only 5 generations. Unless my Johnhad brothers and sisters who came to America. Which is a possibility.
If anyone has any information on my John or Rebecca or any of his children it would be greatly appreciated.
