Ok- my curiostiy go the best of me -
Jacob M. Bewley owned slaves in Jefferson Co. TN, what is interesting is that all the ones who were listed as mulatto were also listed as fugitives from the state, by the 1860 slave schedule. So then you jump forward to 1870 and look at the white Bewley families to see who is living with them and you have a Cyntha Jarnagin and in the same household she is in and there is a Casswell Bewley and then Charles, George, Thomas, Melvin (Melville), now the ages aren't exact match to your Thomas but her age is yet another discrepancy. The Jarnigan's were also slaveholders in Grainger and Jefferson Co. TN, so then you skip forward to 1880 and Cass Bewley, in his household are mother Cintha, and brothers George and Melvin, so then I really took a jump and found that your Thomas had a son Cass and he has in his household, a brother named Charles. So this may be a stretch but it is definitely something to work with.Cintha/Cyntha may have been owned by the Jarnigans and her husband by the Bewley's or the otherway around.Good luck.
