Ezra Bigelow getting mixed up with Ezra Bigelow!
Ezra first appears to me with the right family in the 1856 census of Taylor, Benton Co., Iowa with wife Martha, children Alfred, Susan and Roena.Lists him as born in KY and wife born VA.Every census I've looked at and found that particular Ezra family has him born in KY!So he was probably born in KY, so he is not to be confused with the one born in Grant, Licking Co., Ohio!
This census of 1856 has him listed as a teamster, voter, and in the local militia. Also from iowan Gazateers, I've found he was a treasurer of Benton County for a while, so there must be some record of him.
On the Ohio state Miami Valley Genealogy site, it lists Ezra BigAlow as marrying Martha Nottingham in March of 1849.The 1856 census record lists this as their FIRST marriage for both, so I don't believe that this is the same Ezra as married Mary Preshoe in mercer County in 1842; there were two Ezra Bigelows there in that time perios.Ezra Parker Bigelow, who m. Mary Preshoe probably and just plain Ezra Bigelow who m. Martha Nottingham. In none of the census records (1856, 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1885) does it state a "P" for a middle name; you would think ONE of them would! Also, every one of these census records state he was born in Kentucky, not Ohio! So he is probably NOT the son of Marshall and Elizabeth Hill Bigelow who moved to Ohio from New York.
In two of the above mentioned census records it lists his parents place of birth. In the 1880 it states both of his parents were born in New York.In the 1885 it states both of them were born in Kentucky! The rest simply don't mention it.
The lat mention of him I can find is living in the 1885 census with his son Alfred in Nebraska; he is listed as a widow age 65, which fits since Martha died in 1884.They are buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Benton Co., IA.Some kind soul was nice enough to put them on the web so you can actually read the stones.
As far as I can tell, Ezra and Martha Nottingham Bigelow had five children:
Alfred, the oldest, born in OH, age 6 in 1856 so born around 1850.He is in the 1856, 1860, 1870 census with hi parents, and in the 1885 he lives in Saline NE with his family and his father Ezra.
Susan Bigelow, born about 1852, in Ohio. She is in the 1856 census, 1860, and the 1870 so she presumably married or died before 1880 whent hey are in Vinton Benton Co., IA.
Grant Bigelow.he's a puzzle. He is listed for the first time in the 1870 census as age 16 - he is not in the 1860 that I could find.Lists his birth place as Iowa, as does the 1880 when he is still living with his folks.
Roena Bigelow. She is in the 1856 census of Iowa with no age, but listed as being born in Ohio.by 1860 she is listed as five years old, born in Ohio, so they must have moved from Ohio to Iowa in 1855 just before the 1856 census was taken? She is not in the 1870 census or further, so she either died or married young? She would have been 15 by 1870 and this is not unheard of or workking as a domestic somewhere.
Then Edith, my connection. She was born in Iowa and died 1944 in Montana. She married a Humbert. She was my husband's great grandmother.
I hope I've made the points clear so as not to confuse anyone with too many Ezras, but I believe they are all getting mixed up!
If anyone has any ideas or information or hints or comments please write me back.thank you for your time.
